In 1846, Josh Brown, a Texas Ranger and pioneer, settled in the area that would become Kerrville. He established a shingle-making camp along the Guadalupe River, where cypress trees were plentiful. The town was originally called "Brownsborough" in his honor. However, when the town was officially platted in 1856, it was renamed "Kerrville" after James Kerr, a major in the Texas Revolution and an important figure in the area's history.
